KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
Lessons from the Deep: What the Oceans are Telling Us and Why it Matters
Dr. David E. Guggenheim
Senior Fellow, The Ocean Foundation
Director, Cuba Marine Research & Conservation Program
Host, The Ocean Doctor Radio Show
From the hallways of Washington, DC to thousands of feet below the sea, Friday's Keynote Speaker, Dr. David E. Guggenheim offers a unique perspective on our oceans including their threats and what's being done to reverse their decline. Learn how our perspectives on the oceans have changed over the past 50 years, and despite our species' journey into space, how little we actually know about the salt-water-covered portion of our own planet.
Dr. David E. Guggenheim, the "Ocean Doctor," will take us on a multimedia journey below the surface, to Alaska's Bering Sea and the Gulf of Mexico as he pilots a tiny submersible; to the unexplored waters of Cuba, a living time machine; to breathtaking areas in the Southern Atlantic and Subantarctic, and Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world; and to Gulf communities he is helping to recover from the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Dr. Guggenheim will also share his experiences as an environmental educator and tales from his latest "50 Years - 50 States - 50 Speeches Expedition" across the United States to teach students about the oceans.
Dr. David E. Guggenheim is a marine scientist, conservation policy specialist, submarine pilot and ocean explorer. He is Senior Fellow at The Ocean Foundation in Washington, DC where he serves as director of its Cuba Marine Research and Conservation Program. He is in his 11th year leading research and conservation projects in Cuba focused on coral reefs and sea turtles, a joint effort with the University of Havana.
Also known as the "Ocean Doctor" and host of The Ocean Doctor radio show and the ExpeditionCasts podcast series, Dr. Guggenheim plays a key role in public outreach and education about the oceans. He makes frequent television and radio appearances, having recently appeared on ABC's Good Morning America. In addition he is often seen and heard on CNN, MSNBC, and NPR.
David was born and raised in Philadelphia and his family spent summers at the Jersey Shore. It was on the shores of Cape May, New Jersey and days spent fishing with his dad on their small boat that David fell in love with the sea and later decided to pursue a career in marine science. We at ANJEE are delighted that he is our featured speaker on the Friday of our Blue Conference and are happy to welcome him back to the Garden State.
